United Utilities is building a second
floating solar farm, this time on the
surface of Langthwaite Reservoir.
Once complete, it will generate
enough electricity to meet all the
power needs of the neighbouring
Lancaster water treatment works.
Reservoirs can be an ideal location
for solar power generation as they
offer large unshaded spaces for arrays.
The panels are not visually intrusive
as they absorb rather than reflect
dazzling sunlight.
An installation consists of
solar panels mounted on ras or
pontoons, which are bolted together
and anchored. At Langthwaite, the
pontoons are constructed at the
side of the reservoir and the panels
mounted on top in modules (inset
