Yorkshire Water is trialling the use of
reused treated water from a wastewa-
ter treatment plant to make concrete.
Water from wastewater treatment
plants is usually returned to rivers
and it must meet strict Environment
Agency standards. Although it is
below drinking water quality, it is
nonetheless suitable for reuse in some
industrial processes.
In what it believes is a UK industry
first, Yorkshire Water has transferred
water to Tarmac in Bradford, which
used it to create batches of concrete.
The concrete was transported to
Yorkshire Water's Esholt wastewater
treatment site where it was poured
into 10 by 20m slabs that will become
foundations for a National Test Centre
for emerging water technologies.
