INNOVATION 2018 | 13 I s the drainage industry realising all of the benefits of innovation? This is an exciting time in drainage and especially trenchless technology. There are lots of innovative new products and techniques being developed. But is the industry really structured to realise all of the benefits from this innovation? Source One Environmental (S1E) is a supplier of specialist trenchless technology prod- ucts. We have a dual focus on quality and innovation. These strategies are valued by our customers in terms of benefits to their businesses, but it's unclear as to how much is appreciated by their customers. Our products are pur- repair or lower cost, with an instant impact on budgets. Longevity of repair is a more subtle consideration and prioritisation of this in terms of specification of tested prod- ucts appears to be inconsist- ent across the market. In addition, the UK & Irish markets seem to be particular- ly cost-focused. S1E has sister companies in Europe and the States. None are subject to the constant price pressure we see in our market. To us, this suggests that innovation is only valued here where it results in economic savings. The driver for adoption of our latest products emanates from our contractor custom- ers making choices about how they can best provide solu- tions, rather than from their own utility customers seeking to adopt any particular way forward. The result of their use is a repair at a price for the Water Companies. The visible result of any product improvements is oŠen faster improvements, to enhance their own competitiveness. Overall, our product improvements keep our business and those of our contractor customers ahead of the competition. But does this mean that the industry is missing a trick? A greater involvement from the utilities might see some of the other benefits such as greater per- manency of repair being more highly valued.
