Peacehaven wastewater treatment
works (WTW) has been chosen by
Southern Water as the flagship for a
project to turn its WTWs into resource
hubs to provide excess heat and
power to local communities.
The biodigester at the site already
supplies most of the energy needs of
the plant and sometimes at night or
during especially low flows, the site
draws no power from the grid at all.
The next phase is a £25 million
investment at Peacehaven. This will
enable the site to be a community cen-
tre and massively increase the power-
generating capabilities of the works.
In addition to importing sludge
from other sites for the biodigester,
Southern is hoping to take food waste
from the surrounding area and turn
that into power.
The company's first battery storage
plant will be installed and it is hoped
the energy can be supplied to the grid.
