16 | 31ST AUGUST - 6TH SEPTEMBER 2018 | UTILITY WEEK High viz The Shieldhall Tunnel, built in Glas- gow by Scottish Water, is the biggest sewer superstructure in Scotland. It recently became operational, and in doing so was hailed as "extraor- dinary" by Scotland's environment secretary, Roseanna Cunningham. She said it was "built on the legacy of the country's engineering and water pioneers". Flows now run through the tunnel from the south side of Glasgow, and local communities are predicted to benefit from fewer flooding incidents and improved environmental condi- tions as a result of its construction.
