Water. desalination + reuse September 2018 The Quarterly 7 What happens next? What did people say? The editor Teams poised to pounce on water- energy desal hub The US Department of Energy's commitment to energy-effi cient desalina- tion is exciting. In addition to $21 million given to pilot projects (see page 28), the department has fl agged a funding opportunity for a Water-Energy Desalination Hub, worth $100 million over fi ve years. This is a step-change. Not since the Offi ce of Saline Water was set up in the 1950s, under President Eisenhower, and active under President Kennedy, during the 1960s, has the US federal government backed water technology research so comprehen- sively. That offi ce enabled commercialisation of reverse osmosis (RO). Teams of high-profi le US academics, technologists, researchers, and scientists are poised to strike when the DoE opportunity goes live, likely in September. The investment has poten- tial to lead to a break- through in water-energy technology as signifi cant as RO. If that were to hap- pen, it really would be a game-changer. A tender for construction of an industrial liquids treatment module is scheduled for early 2019, and a further eight contract packages will be tendered from 2019 onwards. Construction of the two facilities is expected to begin in 2019, and to complete in phases from 2023 onwards. "We look forward to working with industry partners and technology providers to build Tuas Water Reclamation Plant." Yong Wei Him, PUB's director of deep tunnel system phase two The company has secured court protection from its creditors until 18 December 2018, and is seeking to sell strategic assets, to secure rescue fi nancing of S$200 million, and to engage strategic investors. The Blomberg report suggested that Stonepeak is considering a sale of its stake, however no confi rmation of a decision, nor indication of a timeframe was given. The deadline for the RfI is 21 October 2018. Seven Seas Water said it will prepare an o• cial response to the RfI. The somewhat opaque nature of the report appears to have silenced any additionally commentary on the move — for now. "The major benefi t that you get with seawater desalination is that it's a drought-proof water supply." Doug Brown, chief executive of Seven Seas Water "Bids shouldn't be so unreasonably low that the fi rm can't pay back its stakeholders."
