water.desalination+reuse September 2018 SPONSORED ARTICLE 11 I n one of the most prosperous areas in the world where almost all the water consumed comes from desalination, ACCIONA Agua is helping to make a funda- mental contribution to the changing trend away from conventional processes of ther- mal desalination (MSF and MED) towards reverse osmosis. Some countries such as Qatar had only used thermal processes to date, considering them more robust. For the last few months, however, ACCIONA Agua has been operating two of the big- gest desalination plants in the world using reverse osmosis, and these will mark a turning point in the technological focus in the Middle East. Ras Abu Fontas 3 whose end customer for the water produced is Qatar General Elec- tricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), has a capacity of 164,000 m 3 per day. It's being operating by ACCIONA Agua for a period of 10 years, as will Umm Al houl (284,000 m 3 per day), part of an inde- pendently owned water and power plant (IWPP) mega-project produces 2,500 MW of electricity and reaches 614,000 m 3 per day of water following the start-up of the new plant. These two contracts confirm the enormous potential of Spanish compa- come on stream in May 2020 –using reverse osmosis technology- and will have a capac- ity of almost 182,000m 3 per day, mak- ing it one of the biggest of its type in the Emirates. This contract comes within the frame- work of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to reduce Dubai's carbon footprint so that it becomes the lowest in the world by that year. Thanks to all these developments, ACCIONA is becoming the benchmark company in the water sector in the Middle East. ACCIONA Agua, leader in desalination in the Middle East nies in the desalination sector. In another recent development, ACCIONA Agua signed a contract to build the Al Kho- bar desalination plant in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia on the east coast of the country around 400 kilometres from Riyadh. It is a turnkey project that offers one year's guar- antee and is valued at over 200 million euros. It is the first project of this type car- ried out by Saline Water Conversion Corpo- ration with a Spanish company. With this award, ACCIONA Agua has become the Spanish water sector company with the strongest presence in an area so short of water as the Middle East, with great potential for growth in the field of desalination and water treatment given its shortage of water. The company has also built the Al Jubail desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, with a capacity of 100,000 m 3 per day to supply a population of over 650,000. As well as this new contract, ACCIONA Agua operates the Fujairah desalination plant (137,000 m 3 per day) in the United Arab Emirates, and recently began con- struction work on the Jebel Ali desalina- tion plant in Dubai in a joint venture with the Belgian company Besix.
