SMART WATER NETWORKS 2018 | 11 I rrespective of the fact that it has perhaps been the hottest summer for many years, winter will inevitably return and for most of the UK, the average winter tem- peratures have been above freezing point over the last couple of winters - as will be seen from the chart below, reproduced with the kind permission of the Meteorolog- ical O• ce. It is entirely likely that we will experience more extreme weather such as the "The Beast from the East" and therefore adequate protection against the freezing of water pipes and ‚ ttings is essential. Water Regulations require any water pipe, ‚ tting or ap- paratus located in a position that is heated for 12 hours or less in any 24-hour period, be correctly insulated to prevent damage by frost – a fact which is o‰ en forgotten by home owners, landlords and occupiers. Our range of products, including Groundbreaker and INSUduct are purpose de- signed to oŽ er prolonged pro- tection from frost by retaining heat within the apparatus as well as inhibiting the penetra- tion of the cold – essentially oŽ ering protection to a point well beyond the time when freezing might occur. Both products are designed to oŽ er frost protection for 3 days or more with temperatures as low as minus 15C! Carefully fabricated to provide long lasting and eŽ ective thermal protection to water pipes and ‚ ttings in external situations, both Groundbreaker and INSUduct not only exceed British Stand- densation on a metal or cold surface inside a moist atmos- phere such as under sinks or bathrooms can cause damage to property. In this regard, a simple thermal jacket can provide appropriate protec- tion to a speci‚ c ‚ tting, a typical example being a water meter which has been le‰ in an unheated room or under a sink. Our Tap Wrap product is designed to overcome such eventualities, being made of a hard wearing and weather resistant outer sleeve and uses "Thinsulation" by 3M industries for its insulation properties. Furthermore, Ground- breaker is the ONLY water meter enclosure approved by WRAS, the Water Regula- tions Advisory Scheme, and is proven to oŽ er by far the best position for the housing of a traditional or smart meter to give home owners easy or remote access to water usage and billing. Surface mounted meter chambers such as Ground- breaker are identi‚ ed in the "Best Practice" guidelines jointly published by the Home Builders Federation and Water UK – copy available on request. As well as being an essential complimentary product to Groundbreaker, on its own INSUduct oŽ ers a cost-eŽ ective solution to the replacement of leaking and lead pipes without the trauma and disruption of having to dig up ž oors, the necessary work o‰ en completed within a couple of hours rather than several days. For situations where water pipes cannot be laid at the recommended depth of 750mm – e.g. over rock, concrete, tree roots etc. Our SHalloduct product oŽ ers a viable alternative to expensive excavations or damage to the local environment. Fabricated to the same high thermal resistivity, SHalloduct oŽ ers a practical solution to problem- atical problems. For many households, there are many situations where the build-up of con-
