rank lowest for
environmental
performance
South West Water has been rated
the worst performer for pollution
incidents and Northumbrian Water
for permit compliance, the Environ-
ment Agency has revealed.
The agency said water compa-
nies needed to do more to protect
the environment despite a gradual
improving trend in environmental
performance over recent years.
The Water and Sewerage Com-
panies' Environmental Performance
Report rates how well the big nine
water and sewage companies did
in 2017.
For the third year running,
United Utilities and Wessex Water
were the top-performing water
companies, joined this year by
Severn Trent in receiving the top
four-star rating.
North west water company United Utilities has announced a hosepipe
ban as the UK continues to experience what is set to be the longest heatwave
since 1976. It comes into effect on 5 August and will affect domestic
customers with the exception of those in Carlisle and north Eden Valley,
where supplies remain at reasonable levels.
As part of its National Infrastructure Assessment published this month, the
National Infrastructure Commission has proposed that there should be a
specific national standard of flood resilience for all communities by 2050.
