14 | 13TH - 19TH JULY 2018 | UTILITY WEEK Awards Constellation Award for Utilities Collaboration Alliance, UK Power Networks Alliance takes an innovative team approach to deliver- ing long-term investments in infrastructure, including refurbishing and upgrading sub- stations, cables and power lines, provid- ing new power connections and diverting electricity networks across London, the East and South East. UK Power Networks' collaboration with Amec Foster Wheeler, Clancy Docwra, McNicholas Construction Services and Morrison Utility Services saw the company and contractors work together to find the best technical solutions, safety and cost savings, while minimising the impact on customers during construction. The Alliance has enabled UKPN to start work early and save time by not having to go through fresh procurement exercises. It allows companies to bring together the best brains to ensure work is delivered smoothly, safely, on time and on budget. Constellation Award for Collaboration with Customers Smart Grid Team, UK Power Networks The Smart Grid team is helping to lead UKPN's and the electricity industry's trans- formation towards a smarter, more flexible electricity grid that can manage the mil- lions of devices on networks by 2030, such as electric vehi- cles, smart meters and heat pumps. To meet these challenges, it set up the UK's first smart grid team, bringing together a group of change-makers, includ- ing power and computer engineers, energy market experts, project managers and customer engagement experts. UKPN said building a smart, flexible network is at the heart of its transforma- tion to a distribution system operator and, while we know some of the technologies, there are others we don't yet know about. The collaborative work of its team today will give customers the choice, flexibility and freedom to take advantage of these new technologies tomorrow. The party at the Hilton Deansgate hotel gave executives and managers a chance to acknowledge and show their appreciation for their workforces' efforts. Around 250 peo- ple attended the aernoon event, which fea- tured guest host, TV comedian Geoff Norcott (pictured right). Welcoming everyone and congratulating the finalists on reaching this stage, Heneghan added: "Utilities are having to diversify and think differently, and even faster and further than they have already done so far. Meeting those challenges – while ensuring sustain- able outcomes for their businesses and the environment – takes exceptional vision, com- mitment and expertise. The great news is that utilities are responding well. Yet these efforts and successes would not be happening with- out the people who make those plans a reality, which is what these awards are celebrating." The winners (Collaboration)
