PROJECTS May-June 2014 | Desalination & Water Reuse | 19 | existing hybrid desalination capacity. This SWRO extension has been developed on a design, build and operate (DBO) basis. Acciona of Spain, the selected DBO contractor, will engineer, design, procure, supply, erect, construct, install, test, commission and operate the new SWRO plant for an initial 7 years. Targeted for completion in the first half of 2015, the new SWRO plant will be built within the F1 IWPP and will consist of: l Pretreatment systems including dissolved air flotation (DAF) and dual media filters (DMF) l RO l Post-treatment systems, including systems for the injection of lime water, carbon dioxide and hypochlorite l Expansion of the plant's tank farm, with one potable water tank to be built within the F1 IWPP's site and a further two tanks to be built on a new site adjacent to the existing tank farm. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the plant and proposed SWRO extension. The new plant will be developed within the plot indicated in light blue within the existing plant. A process flow diagram incorporating the upcoming expansion is depicted in Figure 3 below. A new DAF unit has been designed to be capable of handling all seawater feed to the new and existing SWRO plants. F1 IWPP's existing SWRO plant has a capacity of 37.5 MIGD (170,500 m 3 /d). With the new DAF installed, enough water will be treated to feed both the 37.5 MIGD and 30 MIGD SWRO plants. The DAF treated flow will amount to 820,000 m 3 /d; making it one of the largest pretreatment systems for seawater desalination in the industry. A piloting campaign will be carried out for the DAF to validate its design SHORELINE LOT 1 RO 1 DISCHARGE MED DISCHARGE RO 1 INTAKE MED INTAKE SEA PLOT 4 (4,800 m 2 ) PLOT 5 (12,157 m 2 ) PLOT 7 (1,375 m 2 ) PLOT 6 (6,000 m 2 ) PLOT 9 (820 m 2 ) PLOT 1 (15,600 m 2 ) PLOT 2 (8,800 m 2 ) PLOT 3 (7,500 m 2 ) PLOT 8 (1,200 m 2 ) Figure 2: General Layout.
